Advent brings legal counsel in house

The Boston firm hired its private equity lawyer, James Westra, as chief legal officer to advise on deal structuring and general legal matters.

Advent International has hired James Westra as managing director and chief legal officer. Based in Boston, Westra will advise on deal structuring and general legal matters.

Westra previously was a partner, member of the management committee and co-head of the private equity practice group at Weil, Gotshal & Manges. While at Weil Gotshal, Westra advised Advent on transactions.

“[Westra] has been a tremendous asset to us and other top private equity firms over the past 30 years, and we know that he will help us immensely in deal structuring and bringing best practices to support our global team,” said Advent International managing partner David Mussafer.

Weil Gotshal has provided legal counsel to Advent on a number of transactions, including the firm’s acquisition of RBS WorldPay. In August 2010, Advent teamed up with Bain Capital to acquire WorldPay, the Royal Bank of Scotland’s card payment services business, for £2.025 billion.

Prior to joining Weil in 2002, Westra was a partner at Hutchins Wheeler Dittmar, helping to grow the law firm’s corporate practice.
