JAG Shaw creates VC practice

The law firm hopes the addition of tech specialist Tina Baker (pic) will help it win more business in the venture capital space.

Technology venture capital lawyer Tina Baker has joined forces with boutique law firm JAG Shaw to launch JAG Shaw Baker, a new practice with an added technology focus.

The new firm will specialize in venture capital and high-growth industries, with a particular leaning towards intellectual property and technology rights.

Between them Shaw and Baker – who are both former partners at Brown Rudnick – have experience in the technology, life sciences and clean tech sectors. Baker’s arrival has prompted an expansion of the offices and the team, which will henceforth provide corporate and commercial law services to fast-growing companies in the UK and the US, and to their backers – including early- and late-stage institutional investors, angel investors and family offices.

“The venture capital and high-growth technology sectors are heavily reliant on solid IP and commercial advice, with a technology and internet focus,” said Shaw. “Our clients wanted a legal team with a deep understanding of the nuances of entrepreneurial businesses and venture capital deals.” In a statement, Baker cited the “maturation of the European venture/growth capital ecosystem” as a driver for the move, adding that the team is “very optimistic of its continued growth”.

JAG Shaw Baker’s work includes advising on the Index Ventures-led $20 million round for Egalet; the Valar Ventures-led $6 million series-A funding round for TransferWise; and the £5 million round for Fits.me by an investment consortium.

The founders have been joined by three other partners: Richard Penfold (formerly of Brown Rudnick), who will head the expanded IP practice; Susanna Stanfield (formerly of Taylor Wessing) as corporate partner with a particular focus on Cambridge, and Morven Greig as managing partner.

JAG Shaw Baker said it would continue to grow the team.
