The US investment advisor has hired Kara Sweet as general counsel and managing director to drive the firm’s private equity, hedge fund, real estate and direct investment practice.

US-based investment advisor Watts Capital Group has hired Kara Sweet as general counsel and managing director.

In her new role she will oversee the legal and compliance activities of each of the firm’s businesses. She will also have responsibility for the firm’s alternatives and direct investment businesses, which focus on private equity, hedge funds, real estate and direct investments in innovative companies, according to a statement from Watts Capital.

Sweet has worked as a commercial litigator for 15 years. She joins Watts Capital from law firm Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman, where she served as special counsel for 10 years.
During her tenure she has represented both plaintiffs and defendants on securities matters, alongside contractual disputes, fraud claims, employment matters, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance. Last year, she represented private equity firm TPG, and gained injunctive relief against Adam Levine, former deputy press secretary for George W Bush, in connection with his breach of a confidentiality agreement, according to Kasowitz, Benson, Torres & Friedman’s website.

As general counsel, Sweet will bring her skills to the firm in negotiating contracts, handling employment matters, avoiding litigation and ensuring regulatory compliance, Watts Capital said in the statement. As managing director she will attract new investment opportunities and use her contacts to expand Watt Capital’s client base.
