ILPA appoints OTPP director as new chair

A representative from the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan will spearhead efforts to continue expanding the LP trade body’s global membership.

Last week, the Institutional Limited Partners Association (ILPA) elected five new board members and a new board chair at its annual general meeting.

Tanya Carmichael, a director at the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan, was named board chair. Carmichael has been a member of the LP trade body’s board of directors since 2007 and also sits on the PRI private equity steering committee set up by the United Nations.

Also new to the board this year are Scott Jacobsen (The California Public Employees’ Retirement System); Serra Erdogmus (Canadian Medical Protective Association); Jennifer Magaña (SouthOcean Capital Partners); Rob Ross (California State Teachers’ Retirement System); and Anders Strömblad (Second Swedish National Pension Fund).

Top of the board's agenda list this year will be to continue expanding ILPA's membership globally, particularly in Europe where membership growth has been accelerating in recent years, said ILPA spokesperson Jennifer Choi in an interview with pfm. The group also wants to broaden its educational offering for the investor community, conduct new industry research and continue advocacy efforts around fee transparency and other initiatives important to private equity investors, Choi said.

ILPA is currently seeking feedback on a fee reporting template it unveiled in late October that aims to standardize the way general partners report to their investors. That consultation closes December 11.

Re-joining ILPA’s board of directors this year is Stephen Whatmore of QIC Limited as vice chair; Nicolas Drapeau of Bimcor as secretary; Jennifer Kerr of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board as treasurer; Fabrizio Natale of Washington State Investment Board as chair of GP Summit Committee; Kimberly Woods of IAM National Pension Fund as chair of Industry Affairs Committee; Maurice Gordon of Guardian Life Insurance Corporation of America as chair of Membership Committee; and Neil Randall of Teacher Retirement System of Texas as chair of Research, Benchmarking & Standards Committee.

ILPA has more than 330 institutional member organizations in more than 40 countries, collectively managing over $1 trillion in private equity assets.
