Law firms retain crowns in PEI Awards

Clifford Chance and SJ Berwin have fought off US competition to retain their titles as Europe’s premier private equity legal advisors, with the status quo also preserved on the other side of the Atlantic.

The 2011 Private Equity International awards have revealed London-based law firms SJ Berwin and Clifford Chance continuing their respective hot streaks as Europe’s top law firms for fund formation and deal advisory work respectively.

The achievement comes at a time when an increasing number of US law firms are launching private equity practices across the Atlantic, often poaching talent from the local players to make headway into the European market.

In North America a similar story played out as Debevoise & Plimpton preserved its status as North America’s best law firm for fund formation. Likewise, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett was once again voted by PEI readers as North America’s preferred law firm for deal work.

In the increasingly important Asian markets, Californian law firm O’Melveny & Myers retained its top spot for law firm of the year in fund formation. And Debevoise & Plimpton complemented its North America title by continuing its run as Asia’s best legal advisor for deal work.

In light of the constant shuffling of private equity law lawyers across firms (see links to the right), the wins underscore the importance of name brand and internal controls at premier law firms.
