KKR vows ‘greening’ of offices

In the coming weeks Kohlberg Kravis Roberts intends to launch a series of environmentally friendly initiatives at its New York headquarters, the firm revealed in its latest report on environmental, social and governance (ESG) matters, which covers the 2011 calendar year.

The initiatives will “include reducing waste, updating procurement practices, and improving operational efficiencies around the use of resources, such as paper, bottled water, and kitchen supplies”, the report said.

By the end of the year KKR hopes to have an action plan for “greening” its offices around the world. The firm’s website lists 13 offices globally.

The move echoes efforts already underway at KKR portfolio companies. Since its launch in 2008 the firm’s Green Portfolio Program has saved some $365 million due to energy efficiency, waste handling, process improvements and other initiatives.

KKR’s latest ESG report highlighted a number of recent milestones, including the firm’s “Vets @ Work” programme aimed at hiring US military veterans across KKR portfolio companies; a first of its kind collaboration with anti-corruption group Transparency International; and the hiring of two full-time professionals dedicated to the firm’s ESG work.
