SEC names top examiner in Atlanta

A former Ropes & Gray attorney will lead the exam program in the agency’s Atlanta regional office.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) named William Royer as head examiner in its Atlanta regional office, which supervises registrants based in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama.

Royer will be responsible for a staff of about 40 examiners, accountants and attorneys responsible for examining investment advisers and other SEC registrants.

Before joining the SEC in 2013, Royer was general counsel at Arrowstreet Capital, a public equities investment firm. He began his financial services career as an associate at Ropes & Gray, the Boston-based law firm.

“[Royer] brings a great mix of experience in both the private and public sectors, particularly with regard to compliance and our exam process,” said Marc Wyatt, the SEC’s acting director of the Office of Compliance Inspections and Examinations (OCIE). “This experience and his leadership make him well-suited for our mission to prevent fraud, promote compliance, monitor risk, and inform policy.”

Earlier this year, the OCIE added private equity fees and expenses to its 2015 exam priority list – which Royer will be responsible for executing at the Atlanta office.
