Charlesbank Capital names new CFO

The mid-market firm nabbed Beacon Capital’s finance chief to fill the position, which has been vacant since last summer.

Mid-market PE firm Charlesbank Capital Partners has hired Kevin Whelan as chief financial officer.

Whelan, who joined the firm April 25, will oversee the management and implementation of all finance-related activities including accounting, financial and tax reporting, treasury, portfolio valuation and analytics, and strategic financial planning for Charlesbank.

He replaces John Fiyod, who left the firm last summer to join Northwest Equity partners as CFO. Fiyod assumed the post at Charlesbank in 2016.

Whelan has more than 30 years of experience at financial services firms. He was CFO at Beacon Capital Partners, a Boston-based real estate private equity firm, prior to joining Charlesbank. He joined Beacon Capital in 2007.

Before that, Whelan spent five years on the finance team at Bain Capital, as corporate controller and then as CFO of its global macro hedge fund, Absolute Return Capital.

Based in Boston and New York, Charlesbank focuses on management-led buyouts and growth capital financings, as well as opportunistic credit and technology investments. The firm has raised more than $15 billion of capital since inception.
